House of Memories
I thought of you from time to time
With her father headed off on a gig that she'd practically begged him to go to and Jamie out with Nick and Leah, Nora was left to her own devices with Emma. It had been several months since Emma became a more permanent fixture in their home. She wasn't complaining by any means when it came to having her around frequently. Leah was the closest thing to a sister that Nora felt she would ever get with her mom being gone, unless her dad and Emma decided to start a family of their own. Typically Nora might have worried about being cast outside of the family if they wanted a new one, but she knew her father better than anyone and he was not that type of person. She couldn't have pictured a better dad.
With Emma all to herself, she was determined to get some answers. After, of course, she got ice cream or went and did something fun with her. She could always count on Emma to take her somewhere cool that wasn't music related the way that her dad did. A girl could only do music every minute of every day for so long. She liked going out on hikes and going to the studio that Emma taught at. There were so many fun adventures for her to go on and it was one of the first times it had been just the two of them.
Nora came bounding out of her room and slid in on her socks across the wood floors. Elliot was standing by the door on his way out, his hand absently brushing back Emma's hair from her face and Nora couldn't help the grin on her face. "Shooooo, you're gonna be late and Uncle Mick is gonna be s'mad. We'll be fine, I'll be good, not too much sugar or caffeine, in bed at a decent hour. Gooooo onnnn!" He held his hands up in a surrendering gesture and gave Emma a lingering kiss before he blew one towards Nora before shutting the door behind him.
She gave a bright smile to Emma, "What're we gonna do today?"

My persuasion can build a nation

Things with Elliot have been going in a way that Emma could only see one outcome. She'd been staying over Elliot's more and Leah had become completely and utterly attached to him and Nora. Going home sometimes was such an ordeal. They already have closet space at the Winslows and they took turns taking care of the kids whenever the other was unavailable. It just seemed inevitable. With Nick and Halley's wedding looming closer, Emma couldn't hide the fact that she also wanted what they had.
Of course, she didn't want to put any unnecessary pressure on Elliot so she just treated their relationship as normal as possible. Sometimes, it just felt like they were two people who had kids and shared the same living space. Sometimes, it felt like more. But it didn't change the fact that they were both comfortable with each other, something Emma didn't always feel with Wallace.
Emma could also see how Leah had pretty much abandoned her and had stuck herself to Elliot while Nora had glommed herself on to Emma. She didn't mind the reversal too much, she could understand why Leah, the very quiet and shy girl, would want the peaceful and calm Elliot.
That day, however, Nick had taken Leah and Jamie out for some recreational thing they all enjoyed, so Emma stayed at Elliot's until she realised that Elliot was also going out, leaving her and Nora alone. Emma always enjoyed being with Nora. The kid knew how to live. She also kept Emma on her feet, thinking of ways to entertain both of them at the same time. She had heard that there was a carnival in town a few days ago and had decided that Nora would definitely enjoy that.
When Elliot left after a kiss that left Emma wanting more, she had to bring herself back down to Earth for Nora. She turned to the young girl and placed her hands on her hips. "Alright, you've got two choices. There's a carnival in town for this whole week or we could order pizza and watch a movie where the characters don't break out into song and dance a minute in." She reciprocated the bright smile with her own.

House of Memories
I thought of you from time to time
The options given were both up her alley of enjoyable dates with what she hoped was her future mom. Pizza was her soul food and movies were always a good choice. But a carnival was a dang carnival! If she got to go to the carnival without her father and without Jamie, well, she'd just get to rub it in their faces later and make them feel silly for leaving her behind. That being said, she also sort of hoped they all could meet up with the two later because it would be so much fun with all of her family.
Nora gave one final nod, "Carnival. Definitely carnival." She glanced down at her clothes and had to tilt her head to the side to get a better look and decide whether they were festive enough for a carnival. Nick and Jamie were going to be so jealous, but she didn't mind. Jamie deserved it for ditching her for his brother.
"Does this look okay? Or should I change? What does someone wear to a carnival? I'm not dressing up like a clown," The words flew out of her mouth rapidly, like spitfire. Her dad was always telling her to calm down and slow her speech down so that people could understand what she was trying to say. But her brain worked quickly and she had to keep up with it, otherwise she'd forget what she wanted to say anyway.

"Wise choice, m'lady." Emma nodded as she looked down at what Nora was wearing. Emma was never really fashionable, even though she loved dressing up. Her go to was pretty much the same as Nora. Grungy t-shirts and jeans. On occasion, she would don a dress or a skirt but Emma just didn't like how restraining those things could be.
So her go to response was: "You look fine, baby." She shrugged. As Nora launched into her spiel, Emma had to laugh. There was so much of Nora that reminded Emma of herself. "Even if you do, you'd fit right in." She chuckled before slinging an arm around Nora's shoulder and grabbing her bag from the coat hanger. "Come on, I'm going to teach you how to properly shoot a gun while we're at it. And oh my god you are going to love candy apples and funnel cake and all the diabetes choked foods there. You can't tell your father I'm spoiling you, okay?"

It was kind of endearing that Emma sometimes went on her own little spiels. Nora never found it hard to keep up, always right on track with what she was saying. In fact, she preferred it because then she didn't feel so crazy when she did it herself. Elliot couldn't ever really keep up, so it was nice having someone that could and who didn't make her feel weird about it.
Candy apples and funnel cake sounded incredible, but she understood Emma's request of not telling her dad about the spoiling. Obviously Nora wanted to tell him everything all the time because she hated being apart from him and every minute of her day she wanted to fill him in on. With that being said, she wasn't sure she'd have to tell him about her sugar intake because he was relatively in tune with how spastic she was normally versus how spastic she could get after a sugar high. He wasn't much of a stickler about things like that, but he also tried reining her in by singing to her once she was on the brink of crashing. It always led to her passing out swiftly and easily. The man was a magician.
"You got it. My lips are seals," She drug her finger across her lips to emphasize and she grinned widely as they made their way out the door. "There won't be any creepy clowns right? Like they won't try to eat me or anything?"

Emma chuckled at Nora's pantomiming and walked over to the car, waiting until the younger woman climbed in before walking around to the driver's seat. "The worst thing there would most likely be the haunted house. And nobody's gonna be eating you there." She responded as she started the car and backed the car into the main street.
As always, Emma left Nora in charge of tunes in the car and spent the whole drive to the pier singing along and idly chatting.
"So what new music have you been introduced to lately?" Emma asked. It was a little odd that she was relying on a child for good music but given that she practically lived in a music store, Emma was confident that whatever Nora recommended, Emma would enjoy.

Nora appreciated the control over music. Now that she was in the double digits, Elliot trusted that his daughter had been trained enough to control the music selection. It'd only taken about ten years for him to be trusting over her and she couldn't blame him now given the fact that she used to listen to some terrible Kidz Bop renditions of songs. Elliot couldn't stand them, but he bought them for her anyway.
Cycling through the music, she settled on a good background song, her head bobbing with the beat of it and she wiggled with excitement. Already she was excited to be in the car on their way. She got to spend the whole day with Emma and she knew she was going to have a complete blast.
Nora turned her attention to Emma and grinned, "Lotsa stuff. Dad's got me listening to some underground stuff, he wants me to get an appreciation for the alternative rock era since he knows I've got a thing for punk bands." Her latest kick was pretty electronic punk though, the bass was heavy and the beat was fun and easy to move to. Elliot often let her blast it through the house when they were cleaning or cooking, "He's so weird about the historical side of music ya know? Total dork."

As Nora mentioned all the different types of music genres, Emma tried to keep up with it, not really knowing the difference. She usually listened to whatever was on the radio or what she used to listen to when she was younger. She could just vaguely name the bands and singers that were on her playlist.
Emma laughed and glanced at Nora briefly when she called her father a dork.
"That's what I love about him though." She admitted, not really shying away from being honest with a young girl. "You kind of do the same thing sometimes." She teased, reaching a hand out to poke Nora in her side.

The word 'love' struck Nora and lingered in the air. It was something she liked hearing out of Emma's mouth and she'd heard it frequently from her dad's when talking about Emma. Her smile widened and she nodded, "Me too." Elliot's parenting was unorthodox, she'd figured out as she grew up. Parents often judged the way she acted and said that it was because she was being raised by a man that had his head in the clouds. She never really took it to heart because she loved her life even without her mother around. She had decided a long time ago that most people were just bitter.
Nora swatted at Emma's hand and scrunched her nose up, "Escuse you! I am so not like my dad. He's next level." Obviously she knew she was wrong because she'd adapted her father's personality over the last eleven years. He wasn't as talkative, but once he got on a topic he knew, he wouldn't ever stop. And he was funny, he didn't care what people thought of him or his style of parenting and she loved him for his confidence.
"I think I'm more like you."

Emma laughed at Nora's response at being compared to her father before being struck by something odd when Nora compared herself to her. She felt her heart squeeze in on itself and a smile curved on her lips as she concentrate on the road. She did chance a glance over to her ride companion for a brief second.
Even though they had only known each other for about a year and a half, Emma had to agree that her and Nora were more alike and Leah and Elliot were more kindred spirits. It was odd but at the same time, it made perfect sense.
Her and Nora needed a calming presence in their lives but now that they had each other, they had people who understood.
"I'm not sure that's a good thing for your dad." She teased before turning a corner and saw the looming shape of the Ferris wheel. "Ah, we're here!" Emma announced and looked for a parking spot before jumping out of the car and waited for Nora to do the same. "We've got shooting games, fishing games, throwing games, food, roller coasters, spinning cups aaaand the Ferris wheel. What do you wanna do first?"

Nora snorted out a laugh and covered her mouth with her hand, "You're so right. But he'll be totally fine! He loves us too much to get rid of us." Or at least, she hoped so. She didn't want to make him go off his rocker and be sent to the looney bin. He often made the comment that it was highly likely that she'd be his demise. Nora just pegged it as him being overly dramatic, the way he often said that she was.
Pulling into the lot, Nora found her face pressed against the window, looking at the giant wheel in front of them. Her excitement began to pick up again and she could practically feel herself vibrating. "Yes, yes, yes, yes! I'm so pumped. Omg, this is gonna be so fun!" Her door was practically open before the car was parked and she was out just as quickly as Emma, beside her in a flash.
Her eyes lifted to the woman beside her, her hand already gripping hers and she listened as Emma listed off the possibilities. She pursed her lips, it was always a hard choice between rides first or food. She tapped her finger on her free hand to her chin and shrugged, "I'm thinking we do rides first before food and then games after. Ya know, so we don't get nauseous. Ferris wheel?"

Nora's response made Emma laugh. She definitely had a unique sense of humour for a ten year old.
Her excitement was definitely contagious. After Emma locked the car, she grabbed Nora's hand and they practically skipped to the entrance. They then made a beeline towards the Ferris wheel. Thankfully, there wasn't a line so they got to the ride immediately. It was definitely the tamest one but Emma had a lot of fond memories on the Ferris wheel. Most of them not really safe to share with a ten year old but she did have some family friendly memories as well.
When they were at the top, Emma patted Nora's knee and grinned at her.

House of Memories
I thought of you from time to time
Nora realized that they still had a long day ahead of them. They were going to be together for hours, but as they made their way to the ferris wheel, she couldn't help but want to get down to the very reason she'd wanted alone time with Emma to begin with. Sure, it was in large part because she had no choice and also because she adored Emma. But the big picture in her head was the big happy family that she'd always heard about from people in her classes. Her best friend's family was a little unorthodox, but it still had the main components. Nora's was small, made up of her and her Dad and her Uncle Ethan and cousin Wyatt. Nick was practically an uncle, but he was more so Jamie's older brother than he was any relation to her. The whole thing just seemed kind of complicated to explain, but what it boiled down to was that Nora wanted a mother.
When they reached the top of the ferris wheel, Nora looked up at Emma with her eyebrows pulled together and blurted the words out before thinking about it too hard, "Are you going to be my mom? I know you and Dad are dating, but like, are you going to stay with him forever or...?" She didn't know what it meant to be tactful or that the way she put it might have come off offensive, as if insinuating that Emma was just a temporary fixture in their life. Like a lightbulb that would burn out after a little while rather than a significant wall that held the house together.
Nora loved Emma and she was pretty sure she would no matter what her answer was, but she loved her father more and the idea of him falling in love with someone that didn't plan on sticking around for the long haul didn't sit well with her. Elliot was a marrying kind, he was a family man and Nora knew that it was everything he wanted after spending ten years with him alone. The wheel began moving again, but she kept her eyes on the woman beside her.

Of all the things she expected the twelve year old to ask, what came out of Nora's mouth left Emma a little paralyzed. She had been with Elliot long enough to know that marriage was in the cards. At least for her. She loved him so much and Nora was a huge bonus in her opinion. But she couldn't deny the fact that she was competing with a strong memory of Elliot's last love. Of course, he had never given her any reason to doubt that his love for her was anything but real, but Emma knew what it felt like being second best.
Elliot's late wife had been his childhood sweetheart. Emma couldn't compete with that kind of epic history even if she tried.
In the end, she shrugged and chuckled at the question, ignoring the stinging pain in her chest. "Where do you get all this?" She waved a dismissive hand before clearing her throat. "But...you know I'm not trying to replace your mom, don't you?" She asked, turning to face Nora. "I'm just glad that we're a unit right now."
It sounded so clinical but she didn't want Nora to get the wrong idea about her presence in her and Elliot's life. As much as she wanted to be a permanent fixture in the family, she knew it was up to Elliot.

House of Memories
I thought of you from time to time
There was something unsatisfying about Emma's answer. She'd said they were a unit, sure, but the way it sounded made it seem temporary. Like anything could pull them apart at any minute. She was glad they were a unit 'right now.' Immediately she regretted asking as soon as she had. She knew that there was the possibility of her not liking the answer, but she'd been so sure that there would be no hesitation and that Emma would sound more sure of their situation. It hurt more to think that Emma didn't want to be sure of it though. She could leave whenever she wanted if she was only going to be a 'right now' kind of thing.
Nora clammed up then. Emma was saying that she wasn't trying to replace her mom, but the problem with that was Nora hadn't even known her mom, there was nothing to replace in her mind. Of course she'd always have a place in her heart for her deceased mother, as she was genetically made up of her, but there were no memories tucked away in her mind of the woman that had given birth to her. Only Elliot. And now Emma. If anything, Nora wanted Emma to take the place of her mom because then she'd at least feel normal, having two parents rather than just the one.
Her eyes starting stinging and she was thankful when the Ferris Wheel stopped. Without much hesitation, she just nodded and got off when the lap bar released. Nora's arms folded across her stomach and she began walking, not quite sure where she was planning on going.
